Change Resilience In the Life Sciences

20 years ago, a pharma company would implement a single change, and it would cascade through the organization until the team reached a new normal.

Now, change is constant, and it’s stressful for even experienced scientists, medical doctors, and business leaders.

Yet, how you manage change is key to your and your team’s success.

1. Start With Your Mindset: While change involves letting go of the past, it presents the chance to do things differently. While it can be, hard to jump straight to the future, take time to:

  • Honor what was good about the past
  • Then, consciously reframe the new situation to see how you can bring value

2. Shift Your Language: How we speak powerfully influences ourselves and those around us. Choose words that focus on possibility.

  • Replace limiting phrases like “I can’t” or “I’ll try” with “I can” and “I will”
  • Add the word “yet” to fully commit to the change ahead. Shift from “I don’t know how to do that” to “I don’t know how to do that, yet”
  • Open the questions you ask yourself to remove the limits on the options you have in the future

3. Ask, What Is NOT Changing? We are often distracted by elements outside of our sphere of control, especially during change. By focusing on the elements we have control over, we protect our time and energy, freeing us to make a bigger difference on what we can affect.

Circle of Influence

4. Focus On The Future: Being resilient through change starts with having a clear vision of where the pharma organization is headed and how your mission or purpose tie in.

  • See the big picture
  • Articulate your vision within the larger vision
  • Share your vision and bring your team along

5. Be A Role Model For Change: We’re all leaders to someone. You can inspire others by authentically communicating and demonstrating behaviors that help them navigate change. Be curious about your colleagues’ experiences and support them through your actions, words, and behaviors.
