Presenting & Facilitating with Impact

The ability to speak in public is a key skill for nearly everyone in a customer-facing role. But for those in certain healthcare positions, the need for expert communication skills goes even deeper. For example, field-based medical professionals are frequently required to present complex scientific data — either 1:1 or to larger groups — and facilitate technical discussions among groups of healthcare professionals. In fact, in the run-up to a product launch, MSLs spend 16% of their time delivering presentations and speeches, a task second only to identifying and building KOL relationships (25%). (Dyer)

And while field-based medical professionals may recognize that public speaking is part of the job, they’re not all comfortable with it. Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, is thought to affect up to 75% of the population, including some MSLs. Individuals may feel anything from a slight nervousness at the thought of public speaking, right through to a full-on panic attack.

Bringing the Data to Life

Despite their potential angst and hesitation, most MSLs have a high level of competence when it comes to explaining data. But the real skill lies in expertly engaging the audience, bringing the data to life, and making a real impact. The ability to engage HCPs in meaningful dialogue around the impact on patients — rather than simply disseminating data — requires a great deal of training and preparation. And it delivers results. Of course, an added complexity has arisen more recently, with the global pandemic accelerating the need to adapt these skills to engage HCPs remotely. Presenting complex scientific data and facilitating high-impact discussions is much more difficult in a remote environment.

In response to this ever-present need, Amplity recently launched the Amplity EDGE Presenting and Facilitating with Impact blended learning course. This curriculum supports the development of the skills needed to present effectively whether 1:1 or to a larger audience, both face-to-face and remotely. The program also articulates the skills needed to facilitate a discussion with confidence.
This course provides tools and techniques that can easily integrate into the learner’s presentation and facilitation style, whatever their level of experience. The self-led EDGE On-Demand content consists of eLearning modules that are supplemented with live facilitated Virtual Learning Events (VLEs) for EDGE On-Stream, and face-to-face workshops for EDGE On-Site.

Upon completing the course, learners will be better able to:

  • Plan and prepare for a presentation effectively, with the audience and outcomes in mind
  • Engage an audience and make an impact when presenting, both F2F and remotely
  • Manage an audience effectively and confidently, including difficult situations and people
  • Manage their own emotional state when presenting
  • Facilitate a discussion with confidence to ensure engagement and full participation
